Wed. 7/22, Prevent the Eviction Storm: OTA/OAG Mtg.and MORE

Dear Tenants and Friends,

We urge you to attend the online meeting (email below) sponsored by the Office of Tenants Advocate (OTA) and the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) on how to navigate the upcoming evictions storm.

More than just the conventional channels of assistance like the Emergency Rental Assistance (ERAP) program are needed.  We need a mass blitz of the mayor and council (by email, phone, rallies and demonstrations), to prevent mass eviction.  We must persuade them to meet their obligations as elected officials.  They must provide meaningful assistance to all facing eviction in this time of unprecedented need.

At the online meeting, OTA and OAG will be taking questions from the public. What needs to be asked is what part of the financial burdens resulting from the pandemic will be carried by landlords. And since landlords will not significantly help without being required to do so, how much of the sacrifices should landlords bear? And how can they be required to do so?

The current emergency measure would make tenants shoulder the entire burden, forcing tenants to pay back every penny of rent missed due to a global pandemic that is no fault of their own.  Will the mayor, DC Council, OAG, OTA and indeed all participants, dare to push landlords to give up landlord greed in this time of a broad financial and health emergency?

Stay tuned for alerts from TENAC and other advocates on a campaign to prevent the fast approaching evictions tsunami. Plan on organizing, mobilizing, and taking direct action, in unity with other housing advocates and organizations.

Best,

TENAC Executive Committee
